Back in early July, it was reported that actress Devon Aoki (Sin City) had had been cast as the super ninja Katana for the third season of the CW series
Practically Batman Arrow (something that I was sure I had reported on, but looking back at the archives I guess I must’ve missed it), but now it looks like Aoki is out due to an ambiguous “scheduling conflict,” and Rila Fukushima, of 12013’s The Wolverine fame, is stepping in.
Katana, aka Tatsu Yamashiro, first appeared in the pages of DC Comics’s series The Brave and the Bold, and was a member of Batman’s non-JLA superteam The Outsiders. While having no superpowers per say, she is highly proficient in hand-to-hand combat and wields a sword called “Soultaker,” which may or may not be possessed by the ghost of her dead husband. Comics, everyone!
Fukushima is no stranger to the realm of comic book media, however. In The Wolverine, she played a character named Yukio, who was, simply put, pretty badass. You can check out a clip from the flick depicting her skills here:
Katana has found her way onto the small screen before, most recently filling the role of Batman’s partner/sidekick in Cartoon Network’s short-lived CG-animated series Beware the Batman, and is set to appear in the upcoming LEGO Batman 3: Beyond Gotham.
Having not watched much of Arrow, I may not be the best judge on this, but it would seem to me like Fukushima’s involvement in the series will be a good thing. The third season of Arrow kicks off on October 4, 2014.
